Salipur Volcanic Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous (Berriasian-Aptian).

Province:
E.India Mahanadi Basin

Type Locality and Naming

SUBSURFACE: Well MON-2. [Original Publication: Raju D.S.N, Dwivedi R.N, Misra Ravi, Stratigraphy of Mahanadi Basin, (2009) pp 293-296 in Raju and Misra (2009), ONGC Bulletin, Vol. 44, no.2]

Lithology and Thickness

Volcanics. Predominantly volcanic sequence made up of basalts, tuffs and inter-trappeans. The inter-trappeans are mainly argillaceous. The volcanic rocks vary from nearly glassy to fine to medium-grained textures. The thickness of this formation varies significantly in the offshore wells and ranges from around 25 m to 860 m in the Cuttack graben the thickness of this unit exceeds 2078 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Lava

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the Precambrian basement complex with a major unconformity.

Upper contact

Unconformable with overlying Paradeep Fm.
